Dengue and Chikungunya: The Dirge of a Nation





The 'buzz' words today throughout the country are 'Dengue' and 'Chikungunya'. Both these flu-like illnesses, brought on by the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti female mosquito, have set the death bells knolling in several Indian states. Dengue is the most common mosquito-borne viral disease in the world according to WHO.

The administrative machinery is battling with a situation that is threatening to go out of hand unless a formidable solution appears on the horizon. The onset of monsoons in the country has led to a surge of breeding among these mosquitoes, which co exists with humans and share the same milieu. Both Dengue and Chikungunya are common to the tropics and are not contagious. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which are the causative vectors of both Dengue fever and Chikungunya, carry the virus that causes these diseases. Please note the following about the Aedes mosquito – · It is the female mosquito that feeds on blood as it requires the blood protein to produce its eggs. · The female Aedes mosquito searches for suitable places to lay their eggs and it is usually the stagnant water. The male mosquitoes usually feed only on plant nectar. · Aedes mosquitoes causing dengue usually bite during the day, unlike those that cause malaria, and their biting spree lasts from dawn to dusk. · The mosquito is attracted by the body odours, carbon dioxide and heat emitted from the animal or humans. Dengue, also known as 'break bone fever' is caused by the dengue virus. It sets in eight days after the mosquito bite. Mortality rate can be reduced to 15%, if timely treatment is provided. Dengue fever is sub- typed as Classical and Hemorrhagic.

"More housewives get HIV than sex workers"

With an average of 12 Malaysians testing positive for HIV each day, Malaysia has one of the fastest growing AIDS epidemics in the East Asia and Pacific region. What is more worrying is that the trend is gaining a feminine face, mainly through heterosexual transmission. A new report releases by the Health Ministry and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) yesterday revealed that the trend of new HIV infections amongst women rose drastically to 16% in 2007 from 1.2% of total new cases in 1990.

Surveys showed that in 2006 more housewives tested HIV-positive than sex workers. Besides that, there are thousands of children living in homes shadowed by HIV. The results are a cause for concern as the vulnerability of women and children to HIV are directly linked. Families who are affected by HIV and AIDS, the disease itself does not have so much impact as it can be kept under control for many years with effective treatment. The biggest impact comes from stigma. Mothers whose families are affected by HIV and AIDS are most frightened by the reactions from friends, extended family, colleagues and their communities. Stigma can cause a person to be ostracised by friends and family. It can even cause a HIV-positive husband to disallow his wife to be tested. Besides, stigma can cause a woman to ashamed that she does not seek treatment and meaning an early death and young innocent child left without a mother.

Toxic Chemical Triclosan Found in Common Household Products

A chemical called triclosan poses a health risk, as it is a toxic compound which can promote cancer. The most shocking thing is that triclosan is commonly found in everyday consumer goods such as antibacterial soaps, deodorants, body washes, creams, lotions, cosmetics, cleaning supplies, detergents, dishwashing liquids, and yes, mouthwash and toothpaste.Toothpaste is supposed to help clean your teeth, but what it actually does just might horrify you. When tap water meets toothpaste, the triclosan reacts freely with the chlorine in the tap water to become chloroform (a chlorinated aromatic) and is similar to the dioxins found in the compound Agent Orange. It's a chemical reaction occurring right in your mouth while you brush your teeth. And don't think you are safe once you rinse it all out of your mouth: research shows that it can remain in your mouth after brushing for up to 12 hours, and can be easily absorbed into the tongue and through mucus into the body. (Children are at the greatest risk, as they tend to swallow their toothpaste more while brushing their teeth.)According to the National Coalition Against the Misuse of Pesticides (NCAMP), "Manufacturers of a number of triclosan-containing toothpaste and soap products claim that the active ingredient continues to work for as long as 12 hours after use. Thus, consumers are exposed to triclosan for much longer than the 20 seconds it takes to wash their hands or brush their teeth.""These products produce low levels of chloroform, but that adds up over time. The amount of gas formed is very low but I think the key thing is that we just don't know what the effects are. However, manufacturers do have to list triclosan on their ingredients, so if consumers are worried the best advice is to avoid products with the chemical," said Giles Watson, a toxicology expert.
Triclosan is a Probable Human CarcinogenThe U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Union currently regulate triclosan, and the Environmental Protection Agency classifies this substance as a probable human carcinogen.Toothpaste manufacturers claim that triclosan is used because it helps to reduce plaque and kill bacteria, but it actually aids in gum damage and can cause mouth ulcers, say some health experts. These companies like the chemical because it allows them to state the product is a "99.9% bacteria killer" and make claims about the product being a "medicated formula."According to the chemical creator's website, Ciba Specialty Chemicals "invented triclosan more than 35 years ago and in this long time of application without any adverse effects it has proven itself as the 'aspirin' of the antibacterial actives -- helpful without side effects."The popularity of triclosan is a reflection of its unique combination of efficacy against almost all types of bacteria and safety to man and nature which with the currently known substances used cannot be surmounted."The toothpaste manufacturers haven't done any substantial studies that reach a decision on whether to take triclosan out of their products. They continue to say that it is safe and only harmful if ingested. Even then, they say it only affects the nervous system (as if that's something very minor to have harmed).No Good Science Supporting Safety of TriclosanAccording to the American Medical Association: "Despite their recent proliferation in consumer products, the use of antimicrobial agents such as triclosan in consumer products has not been studied extensively. No data exist to support their efficacy when used in such products or any need for them…it may be prudent to avoid the use of antimicrobial agents in consumer products." The chemical company states: "Ciba supports the use of triclosan only if there is a benefit to human beings."So, what if it is shown to offer no benefit to humans? Will they pull it off the shelves now that evidence points to its danger from exposure? (Some toothpaste manufacturers, like Tom's of Maine, specifically state that they do not contain triclosan.)Also Found In Toys, Bedding, Clothing And MoreTriclosan is also used in plastics and fabrics, where it goes under the trade names Microban and Biofresh respectively. It is infused into or used as an additive in a number of consumer products like toys, bedding, trash bags, socks, kitchen utensils, textiles and plastics."Over 95% of the uses of triclosan are in consumer products that are disposed of in residential drains. In a U.S. Geological Survey study of 95 different organic wastewater contaminants in U.S. streams, triclosan was one of the most frequently detected compounds, and in some of the highest concentrations," according to the NCAMP.According to Worldwatch Institute: "In the United States, 75% of liquid soaps and nearly 30% of bar soaps now contain triclosan and other germ-fighting compounds whose prevalence can foster the growth of bacterial resistance."The widespread use of triclosan is now known to create the risk of breeding new, resistant superbugs that may be far more dangerous to human health than the original germs killed by triclosan in the first place. My advice to consumers is to avoid all products containing triclosan.What To Do• Avoid all products that make "antibacterial" claims (unless they are using herbs to accomplish it).• Be aware of the harmful environmental impact of consuming products containing triclosan. The ingredient is not only unhealthy for humans, it's also unhealthy for the environment.• Read the ingredients labels of all consumer products in order to make sure they do not contain triclosan.

CERVICAL CANCER VACCINE

What is cervical cancer/ carcinoma of the cervix?
Cervical cancer is malignant tumor in the cervix (structure between vagina and the uterus).The peak of incidence occur between the age 20-30.Worldwide, about 500,000 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed each year, resulting in 250,000 deaths.We should understand that Cervical cancer is not cause by hereditary.

Nearly all cases of cervical cancer is caused by Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. When someone got infected, this virus causes a short period of symptoms and then it disappears without any treatment. This virus persist in the cervix epithelium for years and gradually changes the genetic apparatus of the cells and then leads to excessive proliferation of infected cells and formation of intraepithelial neoplasia.

Who is affected?
HPV infection is a sexually transmitted disease. It usually infects any young people (age 16-30) that are sexually active with multiple partners. The incidence is highest in developing country such as India, Thailand; where prostitution of young girls is very high. The ratio of cervical cancer to breast cancer in these countries is 3 : 1.
People at risk of acquiring this infection are people who:- started sexual life at a very young age (<17 yrs old)- has multiple sexual partners- had unprotected sex without condoms- has husband/partner who previously has a wife died because of cervical cancer (yes, this virus love glans penis, it lives and multiplies there and this infected penis will be the carrier of this HPV infection)- has medical history of STD
*Gays can also be infected with HPV but since the location of poking will be different, they will get anal cancer.
Smoking increases the rate of malignisation of cells. Don’t think that holding a cigarrette, naked in bed with some cute guy is cool. It can kill you. (I think nowadays people watch too much drama series. tsk tsk, this is bad, very bad.)
The incidence of cervical cancer is almost none in virgins.

Who needs the vaccine?
This vaccine is recommended to female age 13 - 26 years old. The younger the better, before she start having sex. The vaccine will activate immune system against HPV before she is expose to the virus. (If you plan to engage in a lot a lot of sex act with many guys in future, I think it is better to be vaccinated.)
The vaccine is given as a series of three injections over a six-month period. The second dose is given two months after the first dose, followed four months later by the third dose.
Women that are already sexually active, this vaccine will still be effective, it reduces the risk of transformation of cervical epithelium into cancerous cells.
*boys age 9-15 yrs old can be vaccinated as well if you suspect he has tendency to be homosexual to prevent anal cancer.
Are you in the risk group? Then you will need the vaccine for sure. On the other hand, other girls (virgin/non-virgin) can consider taking this vaccine as a prophylaxis.

Anti Coal-Fire Plant in SANDAKAN SABAH


















Dirty Coal Power
We all use electricity in our daily lives, almost without thinking about it — turning on the lights, listening to the radio, using computers. If we stopped and learned about the energy we use, we would encounter some shocking realities about how energy production affects our health and our environment.




Where Our Power Comes From
With all the amazing technological advancements over the last century, one thing that has not changed very much is our reliance on fossil fuels, in particular, dirty coal to generate electricity. More than half of the electricity generated in the United States comes from coal.1 The producers of the largest share of our nation’s energy, coal-fired power plants are also one of the dirtiest sources of electricity.






Older Plants are Dirtier
When the Clean Air Act of the 1970s was passed, Congress included a "grandfathering" loophole that allowed older power plants to avoid meeting the modern pollution control standards that new facilities had to adapt. At the time, Congress allowed the loophole because it expected that these "grandfathered" plants would soon retire and be replaced by cleaner, new plants. However, many of these older coal-fired power plants have sidestepped the new source review provision and have illegally avoided installing modern pollution controls.2 As a result, today most existing power plants are between 30-50 years old and are up to 10 times dirtier than new power plants.3 We are now faced with a disproportionate amount of pollution coming from these old, dirty, under-controlled plants.




Dirty Coal-Fired Power Plants and Air Pollution
Power plants are a major source of air pollution, with coal-fired power plants spewing 59% of total U.S. sulfur dioxide pollution and 18% of total nitrogen oxides every year.4 Coal-fired power plants are also the largest polluter of toxic mercury pollution5, largest contributor of hazardous air toxics6, and release about 50% of particle pollution.7 Additionally, power plants release over 40% of total U.S. carbon dioxide emissions, a prime contributor to global warming.8




Smog and Ozone
Power plants are second only to automobiles as the greatest source of NOx emissions.9 When nitrogen oxide (NOx) reacts with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and sunlight, smog (ground level ozone) forms. Of the six major criteria air pollutants regulated by the EPA, NOx emissions have historically been the hardest to control. One of the contributing factors is that NOx emissions from huge dirty coal plants in one region can easily pollute areas hundreds of miles downwind. The American Lung Association estimates that almost half-48% or 140.5 million- of Americans live in areas with unhealthy levels of smog.10 When inhaled, smog can cause a wide range of health problems, including immediate symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pains, wheezing, and increased susceptibility to respiratory problems.11 Smog can also cause many more serious problems like increased risk of asthma attacks and lung inflammation. Recently, scientists concluded that exposure to smog can be deadly. Smog affects everyone, but is especially dangerous for children, the elderly, and those with respiratory problems. Even our national parks have not escaped the smog and ozone pollution caused by coal-fired power plants. Many parks already experience unhealthy air days, and the problem is getting worse.12 Smog concentrations have increased at 22 of 31 National Park Service monitoring sites since 1990. This persistent ozone pollution can harm plants and vegetation by damaging leaves and disrupting growth.13 Along with other pollutants, nitrous oxides can also chemically alter soil and water, leading to acidification and other serious problems that harm plants and animals.




Particle Pollution and Soot
Coal-fired power plants are also the largest single source of sulfur dioxide (SO2), releasing about 2/3 of the total SO2 pollution each year.14 Sulfur dioxide, which can travel long distances in the atmosphere before falling down to the land, can cause problems on its own as well as when it combines with other pollution to form other dangerous compounds.15 In addition to acid rain (see below), SO2 can combine with nitrogen oxide (NOx) and other particles to form particulate matter, which is sometimes called soot. Particulate matter, which can also be released directly from the smokestacks of coal-fired power plants, is often divided into categories based on the size of the particles-coarse, fine, and ultrafine-but all three are hazardous to your health and the environment.16 Particle pollution is one of the most dangerous air pollutants, and over 64 million Americans are estimated to breathe air that has so much particle pollution that it puts their health at risk.17 Particle pollution can trigger heart attacks and strokes, lead to cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), cause respiratory irritation, and worsen asthma. Both short-term and long-term exposure can cause premature death. In fact, particle pollution from power plants in the U.S. leads to over 30,000 deaths each year-a shocking figure when compared to the 17,000 homicides committed each year.18 Cutting power plant emissions by 75% could avoid more than 18,000 of the deaths caused by particle pollution. In addition to its health impacts, particle pollution is also the number one cause for haze, or reduced visibility, in the U.S., including in our National Parks.19 Regional haze from airborne pollutants has reduced annual average visibility in the U.S. from natural conditions to about one-half in the west and to one-third in the east.20




Acid Rain
Acid rain, or acid deposition, occurs when sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) react with water and oxygen in the atmosphere to form acidic compounds, most commonly sulfuric and nitric acid.21 These acidic compounds then either mix with natural precipitation and fall to the earth as acid rain, or remain dry and then settle to the ground. In the U.S., coal-fired power plants are the single largest source of SO2 pollution (66%)22 and the second largest source of NOx pollution.23 Acid rain destroys ecosystems, including streams and lakes, by changing their delicate pH balance making them unable to support life. Acid rain can destroy forests, devastate plant and animal life, and eat away at man-made monuments and buildings to effectively destroy our natural and historical treasures.24 Already, numerous lakes and streams in the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York are too acidic to support fish life, and long-term acidification continues to threaten the Chesapeake Bay.25




Air Toxics and Mercury
Coal-fired power plants are the largest single man-made source of mercury pollution in the U.S.26, and are the largest contributor of hazardous air pollutants.27 In smokestack tests, coal-fired power plants were found to release 67 air toxics, many of which are known or suspected carcinogens and neurotoxins that can cause development problems, respiratory problems, and aggravate asthma.28 Of these air toxics, one of the most dangerous is mercury. Mercury from coal-fired power plants is released into the air through the exhaust system when coal is burned. The primary exposure for Americans occurs when this mercury falls to the earth and runs into our lakes, rivers, and streams and contaminates the fish.29 Humans can be contaminated when they eat these fish and shellfish. In 2004, 47 states and territories had fish consumption advisories for mercury for at least some of their waters.30 Mercury is a developmental toxin, primarily affecting fetal development.31 In unborn children, it can cause brain damage, mental retardation, blindness, and many other problems. Infants are also exposed to these dangers through contaminated breast milk. While the dangers of mercury are most often associated with women and children, eating fish high in mercury has also been found to put middle-aged men at a greater risk for coronary heart disease.32




Global Warming
Burning fossil fuels such as coal releases carbon dioxide (CO2) pollution, making energy use the single largest source of greenhouse gases in the U.S. and the world.33 Currently there is 30% more CO2 in the atmosphere than there was at the start of the Industrial Revolution, and we are well on the way to doubling CO2 levels in the atmosphere during this century. Although the US has only four percent of the world’s population it emits about 25% of global warming pollution.34,35 Power plants emit 40% of total U.S. carbon dioxide pollution, the primary global warming pollutant.36 Although coal-fired power plants account for just over half of the electricity produced in the U.S. each year, they have been responsible for over 83% of the CO2 pollution since 1990.37 Coal-fired power plants have the highest output rate of CO2 per unit of electricity among all fossil fuels.38 The atmospheric concentrations of CO2 and other greenhouse gases reached a new high in the 1990s, the hottest decade on record.39 Average global temperatures have risen already by one degree Fahrenheit, and projections indicate an increase of two to ten degrees within this century. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has reported that global warming threatens human populations and the world’s ecosystems with worsening heat waves, floods, drought, extreme weather, and by spreading infectious diseases. Unfortunately, global warming problems continue to grow as more greenhouse gases are spewed into our atmosphere.



Challenges and Solutions
The facts are in: coal-fired power plants and the pollution they release every day are a major threat to human health and our environment. We need to act now to clean up dirty coal power through pollution reductions that can protect our families now, not in two decades. We also need to reduce our dependence on dirty coal by retiring and replacing these plants with clean energy alternatives like wind, solar, and improvements in energy efficiency.
We have the technology today to implement real energy solutions that will move our country forward into a brighter energy future. These solutions can curb global warming and cut air pollution, while at the same time building a clean, sustainable economy that lowers energy bills and creates thousands of new jobs. University Rakyat di Malaysia

This proposed University is a free university for all Malaysians regardless of race and entrace shall be based on merits. The selection of lecturers in this university shall also be based on merits and without any form of quota. In line with the reduction of the subsidy of petrol and diesel in Malaysia, it is hope that the Malaysian government can use part of the savings from the reduction of the subsidy to establish this University for all Malaysians.
This proposal is:- 1. in line with the Malaysia's government effort to promote the development of Human Capital and to exploit the potential of all Malaysian youth;

Marine natural products and their potential applications as anti-infective agents

The oceans are a unique resource that provide a diverse array of natural products, primarily from invertebrates such as sponges, tunicates, bryozoans, and molluscs, and from marine bacteria and cyanobacteria. As infectious diseases evolve and develop resistance to existing pharmaceuticals, the marine environment provides novel leads against fungal, parasitic, bacterial, and viral diseases. Many marine natural products have successfully advanced to the late stages of clinical trials, including dolastatin 10, ecteinascidin-743, kahalalide F, and aplidine, and a growing number of candidates have been selected as promising leads for extended preclinical assessment. Although many marine-product clinical trials are for cancer chemotherapy, drug resistance, emerging infectious diseases, and the threat of bioterrorism have all contributed to the interest in assessing natural ocean products in the treatment of infectious organisms. In this review, we focus on the pharmacologically tested marine leads that have shown in-vivo efficacy or potent in-vitro activity against infectious and parasitic diseases.

Last night incident made me scary..:(

Last night as usual i waited my sis bac home and watched drama at home. Last night she came bac home quite late about 8pm like that. Then, I said hungry " I wan order pizza" haha.. Then after pizza arrived and paid. We had our pizza and enjoyed drama. After that i heard some motor outside my house, i thought who come to find us, then i looked outside and i saw an indian man open my gate door and enter my house.. He said wan collect money..Har..I think he was suspicious people then I and my sis ran to upstairs. After few minutes then he onli away from my house. We observed him upstairs.. HE still carried his motor to other house to ask for money. Finally he seem no ppl choi him then he roded motor away. Few minutes later i and my sis thought nothing happen and we continue dramaing. And i quickly ran outside to lock the gate door.. I switched off all the light..Few minutes later, i heard the motor sound again. The motor sound near my house i think and tried to open my gate door but i locked it..Luckily..HE seem not satisfied and wan for money..GILA..Then i seem so worried and i sms the POLISKL.. Dunno they got ronda my place or not..haha..Now i heard motor sound oso very scare...HAte those indian man..They so ham sap..look like ghost...with red eyes..haiz..Finally, I think nothing happen and i slept at 12am.. Coz scare the motor sound..Wherever u at home or out home, remember to lock ur gate door...haha..dun let stranger come in.. I remind all my housemates..NExt time when i saw this type of situation i mus record his motor number..Then hope police can aware this ppl..hehe..Coz when the police asked me the motor number i said i duno.. wat type of motor i oso dunno..haha..

QUARANTINE MOVIE TRAILER (ON THE SCREEN NOW)

Television reporter Angela Vidal (Jennifer Carpenter) and her cameraman (Steve Harris) are assigned to spend the night shift with a Los Angeles Fire Station. After a routine 911 call takes them to a small apartment building, they find police officers already on the scene in response to blood curdling screams coming from one of the apartment units. They soon learn that a woman living in the building has been infected by something unknown. After a few of the residents are viciously attacked, they try to escape with the news crew in tow, only to find that the CDC has quarantined the building. Phones, internet, televisions and cell phone access have been cut-off, and officials are not relaying information to those locked inside. When the quarantine is finally lifted, the only evidence of what took place is the news crew’s videotape. (*** HORROR MOVIE!!!THIS TYPE OF MOVIE MAY CONTAIN SOME UNCOMFORTABLE SCENES!!! On 16th of Nov, I and my sis decided to go one utama to look clear at ASIMO (Advanced Step In Innovative Mobility). A humanoid robot. He can runs, walks, and dances. An more importantly, he inspires all us to dream..:P.

CLEO FASHION RAVE on 8th of NOV 2008

On 8th of Nov 2008, I and my sis bought cleo magazine to the Fashion Rave at PAvilion kl. My sis said she didnt go to fashion show before..haha.. Then we went there and have a look.. Not much interesting there..The show was delayed for one and half hour.. Got free goodies bag.. Inside got lots of free gifts such as hydrating herbal essences shampoo, Rexona, one maybelline lip gloss, one pencil box, 2 pencils, coupons, one recycle bag ( I like it the most) etc..But next time i wont go to this type of event..Sienz la..The security guard of PAvilion kl not allow audience sit on the long stairs there..haiz..Dun wan go liao next time..:(
